Nature inspires me. I came up with the name
Oak Communications when my husband and I were hiking near Sedona,
AZ and the oak trees were turning magnificent fall colors. It
was on that trip that I decided to start my own company, and
I was inspired by the beautiful and mighty oaks. I still have
some of the acorns that I picked up that day as they represent
the seeds of my business.
Oaks are found all over the world and there
are hundreds of varieties. They have deep roots and their branches
spread wide. They provide shade when it is hot. Their wood is
used to make furniture, floors and entire homes. Squirrels drop
acorns in my yard and I am always delighted when
I discover oak seedlings sprouting.
I added the word Communications to Oak because
communication is key to healthy relationships and healthy organizations.
The American Heritage Dictionary defines communication:
1. The act of communicating; transmission;
2. The exchange of thoughts, messages, or the like, as by
speech; signals, or writing. 6. Plural: The art and technology
of communicating.
I see my work as a coach and consultant as
the art and technology of communicating in order to help individuals
and organizations to be effective and fulfilled.
Once I named my company after an oak, I started
seeing references to acorns and oaks everywhere. For example,
in an article in the San Francisco Chronicle (American
dream, Sonoma style: Ulises Valdez goes from pruning vines to
making his own wines, by Linda Murphy, 9.29.06), the author
describes Valdez's lucky tree, "an ancient oak as characterful
as the confident, spirited Valdez." "Valdez sees in
the tree what he sees in himself: strength, drive and the ability
to survive." |
